Ansel D. Glass

Tragic Pioneer

Founding Era (1830s-1840s)

Ansel D. Glass is the central figure in one of Hubbardston's most haunting early stories. In March 1838, Hiram Brown discovered Glass's cabin burned to the ground with three bodies inside — Glass's wife and two children. Glass himself had vanished. Despite investigation, the mystery was never solved: whether Glass perished elsewhere, fled, or was responsible for the fire remains unknown. The Glass Tragedy is one of the earliest recorded events in North Plains Township history.
